A new identification system to safeguard the identity and personal information of students is being implemented this summer at Laredo Community College.
Under the new system, LCC students are assigned a new, eight-digit ID number to eliminate the use of Social Security numbers. Several college computer systems have been modified to use the new number system to identify students. Also, new ID cards have the new student ID number printed instead of the student’s Social Security number.
Students can obtain their new ID card in the Student Activities Department in the Kazen College Center, room 122 (LCC Main), or the Billy Hall Student Center, room 110-A (LCC South). A card showing the new student ID number also may be attained at the Admissions/Registration Office at either campus.
“Preventing identity theft is a top priority at Laredo Community College. This new student identification system is an extra step, above and beyond what the law requires, to help the college offer the highest level of security and protection to students,” Felix Gamez, director of admissions and registration, said.
A magnetic strip and bar code are embedded in the new student ID card. An eight-digit identification number is printed on the front panel of the card.
Students returning in the fall and living on campus are asked to obtain a new ID card after the registration period, Gamez noted.
“Returning students who regularly used their ID cards are encouraged to get their new cards immediately to avoid any inconvenience, since the old cards are no longer valid at the Yeary and Zaffirini libraries, athletic facilities and student services departments on both campuses,” Gamez said.
Additionally, the new student ID number is needed to register for classes and view grades via the college’s On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system.
