National internship in sciences available at LCC

Graduating high school seniors with interests in science or engineering careers should attend an informative seminar on Thursday, April 21, to learn more about a national internship program offered at Laredo Community College.

Tom Miller, director of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center, said that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration campus intern program is open to any high school senior graduating in May and planning to attend LCC to pursue a college education in science or engineering.

The seminar will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the LBVE Science Center on the north side of the LCC Main campus.  The event will include a social and a tour of special NOAA projects.  A catered dinner will be served and current interns will offer presentations on their experiences.

LCC students who have participated in the internship during the past two years have enjoyed the benefits and educational experiences, that the program offers, Miller said.

“For four semesters, sixty students have been placed in community positions within the areas of science, outdoors, environmental, health and engineering.  They have participated in field trips to NOAA facilities in Galveston, Corpus Christi and Brownsville,” Miller noted.

Seniors, science teachers and counselors are encouraged to reserve their spot at the seminar by calling the LBVE Science Center at 764-5701.  Buses can be provided for school pick-ups.
