Youth can have fun at LCC recreational camps

Hoop, kick or swing.  Laredo area children have several fun and beneficial options to spend their summer at three exciting recreational camps at Laredo Community College.

Co-ed day camps are available for basketball, soccer and softball.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to once again offer a fun and recreational summer experience for the benefit of area youth.  Our head clinicians are college and school coaches who love working with young people and who really live the game,” said Dr. Sara Carrasco, Kinesiology Department chair.

Two, eight-day Basketball Day Camps are planned, including a session from May 30-June 9 and another from June 13-June 23.    Campers will meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the LCC Maravillo Gymnasium.

Local physical education experts and coaches Dr. Carrasco, Art Smith and Randy Gibbons will lead the annual Basketball Day Camp.  Carrasco is the department chairperson and instructor in the LCC Kinesiology Program and former coach.  Smith is a former assistant basketball coach at Cigarroa High School.  Gibbons is a former assistant basketball coach for Providence High School in San Antonio.

Enrollment is open to kinder, elementary and middle school boys and girls, beginning with age 5 and ending with middle school students who have not played varsity basketball.  The camp fee is $55 per session.

Also available this summer is an Indoor Arena Soccer Camp for school children from kindergarten to middle school.  Two camp sessions are planned on the same dates as the Basketball Day Camps from 4:15-6:50 p.m. in the Maravillo Gym.

Carrasco will be the camp director.  Jaime Donjuan will be the coach.  Assistant student coaches will be Jose Arreola, Jose L. Ronces and Henry Escamilla.  The camp fee is $40.

Co-ed softball will be a new addition to the line-up of LCC’s recreational day camps.

Two sessions of the eight-day softball camp will be offered, June 6-16, and June 20-30 at the softball field at LCC Sports and Recreation Center.  The camp will be Monday through Thursday from 8:30-10:30 a.m.  The camp fee is $40 and open to boys and girls ages 5 and up.

The softball camp coach will be Jorge Canales, recreation supervisor and coach at the Laredo Job Corps Center, and Pat Soto, a long-time coach at United D.D. Hachar Elementary and head coach for the Webb-Police Activity League (PAL) for area youth.  They will be assisted by several college student-coaches.  Carrasco will be the head organizer.

In addition to helping campers develop their athletic abilities, Carrasco said that the camps will help participants develop self-confidence and positive discipline.

Highlights of the camps include individualized instruction, challenging age-level league play and awards for all competition.
