LCC pins on ‘Red Ribbon’ Oct. 25-26

A national effort to promote drug-free lifestyles will be observed by students at Laredo Community College during the upcoming Red Ribbon Awareness Days at both main and south campuses.

LCC will present its annual Red Ribbon Day community fair from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the Billy Hall Student Center at LCC South and on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the Kazen College Center at the main campus.

The event is sponsored by the local Red Ribbon coalition, LCC Health Services, the Counseling Center and the Student Activities Office.  The event is free and open to students and the public.

Ten city, county, state and federal community and law enforcement agencies will display information and distribute literature about their services and about drug abuse prevention.

“Laredo Community College and the Red Ribbon Coalition annually join forces to show our students and the community the detrimental effects of using illicit drugs,” said Health Services director Melissa Garcia.

Among agencies scheduled to participate are the Laredo Crime Stoppers, South Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, Texas Department of Transportation, Texans Against Drunk Drivers, Union Pacific, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Gregory’s Driving School, and the City of Laredo Health Department.

The Red Ribbon campaign was launched in memory of DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985.  The red ribbon has become the symbol for the nation’s war against drugs.
