Songs made famous by some of Mexico’s most famous singers and composers come to life during an evening of exhilarating mariachi and romantic music at Laredo Community College Wednesday, Nov. 16.
“Renacer Mexicano (Reborn Mexican)” is the theme of a cultural music extravaganza featuring the college’s Mariachi Palomino ensemble and the Traditional Guitar Group. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater. Admission is free to the public.
The program will begin with a performance featuring Mariachi Palomino, led by new music/strings instructor Luis Casal.
The mariachi ensemble will delight audiences with its interpretation of popular Mexican pieces, including Cuates Castilla’s “El Pastor,” “Cucurrucucu” by Tomas Mendez, “Cuando sale la luna” by Jose Alfredo Jimenez and “Balaju.”
The Traditional Guitar Group will perform an array of songs from old Mexico, including a special musical selection to celebrate the student performance ensemble’s 15th anniversary.
“The Traditional Guitar Group will celebrate this special anniversary by welcoming back some of the founding members of this music group established in 1990,” said J. Alfredo Iñiguez Jiménez, a founding member and the group’s new musical director.
Iñiguez is a full-time science instructor at LCC, but his passion for performing traditional music from Mexico has remained constant in his life. This fall, he was thrilled to accept the duties of directing the Traditional Guitar Group.
The responsibility for leading the traditional group has become a family affair for Iñiguez. He is receiving support from his brother Ricardo G. Iñiguez, who is the producer/director of LCC TV productions and assisting the group as voice director. Alfredo also is getting vocal support from his parents and a niece.
Among the selections that the Traditional Guitar Group will perform are “Si te doy mi Corazon” by Jimmie Grane, “Gema” by Guicho Cisneros, “Amor Eterno” by Juan Gabriel, “Odiame” by Rafael Otero, “Tres regalos” by Guicho Cisneros, “Luna Blanca” by J. Guzman Gonzalez de Castejon and “Como” by Chico Novarro. The group also will perform the well-known “Las Mañanitas.”
Members of the Mariachi Palomino are Joy Alva, Albert Benavides, Gerardo Contreras, Deyanira de la Peña, Lizeth de la Peña, Jose de Leon, Julio Espinoza, Jesse James Garza, Eleazar Huertas, Linda Cristina Leal, Genaro Lopez, Juventino Lozano, Dennis Quiroz, Felipe Suarez, Joshua Valadez and Rudy Vasquez.
