LCC intensifies relief efforts for Katrina, Rita victims

As the need to provide aid to families impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita intensifies, so will relief efforts at Laredo Community College.

LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina said that students and staff are committed to doubling their relief efforts to help storm refugees, a number which is expected to grow with the impending terror of Hurricane Rita and the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.

A big yard sale and celebrity volleyball benefit are set for Sunday, Oct. 2.

A wide array of gently used clothing and household articles, donated by LCC employees and student groups, will be sold during the Hurricane Katrina/Hurricane Rita Benefit Yard Sale on LCC main campus grounds in front of the Kazen College Center.

Among items for sale will be clothes, electronics, kitchenware, toys and much more.  The event will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  The public is encouraged to take advantage of the great bargains that will be available to support this worthy cause.

The yard sale will be followed by the Spike Katrina/Spike Rita, Serve the Victims Celebrity Volleyball Benefit at 1:30 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium.

The match will feature two teams consisting of local celebrities and LCC Palomino volleyball players competing against each other during this exciting fundraiser.

Each celebrity participant is expected to donate at least $100 for an opportunity to play, either through a personal or corporate donation, or by receiving pledges.

The entry fee to watch this fun-filled celebrity game will be a donation of school supplies, children’s books or $1, for the benefit of displaced children attending Texas schools.

Food and drinks also will be sold throughout the day.  All proceeds will benefit persons affected by the storms.

For more information on joining the celebrity teams, contact Athletic Director Troy Van Brunt at 721-5494.
