Rush week adds to college experience at LCC

The fall semester is now in session at Laredo Community College, but students have an opportunity to put their books aside and explore other rewarding and light-hearted benefits of college life during Rush Week, Aug. 29 to 31.

Rush Week, a tradition at many colleges nationwide, is an opportunity for students to get acquainted with and get involved in activities outside the classroom by becoming a member of a student organization or club.

This year, the LCC Student Activities Office decided to offer the same experience to students and much more.

In addition to the student club awareness days, other activities are planned for students during Rush Week.

                * Aug. 29-31: Student clubs and organizations will be at the Kazen College Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Among the participating groups are the Choral Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Speech/Drama Club, G-Force (college awareness), Nuestras Raices Spanish Club, Palomino Express student newspaper, Science Venture Club, Catholic Campus Ministry and the Learning Center.  All students are encouraged to participate and get involved.

                 * Aug. 30: Coyote on Campus, a national novelty program, is brought to the college campuses, thanks to the LCC Student Activities Office.  LCC students will be able to get their picture taken and have their image imposed on a customized postcard or keychain.  Free of charge with a valid LCC student ID card.  The attraction is at the south campus from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at the main campus from 1 to 5 p.m.

        * Aug. 30-31: Wanna be an actor?  Consider auditioning for the LCC Drama Workshop production of “Proof,” written by David Auburn and directed by LCC drama instructor Gil Martinez Jr.  Auditions on both days start at 7 p.m. in the Adkins Building, Arena Theater.  “Proof” is a highly acclaimed drama that has earned many awards since its Broadway opening in 2001, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  The play is about character, about finding solutions to life’s problems, and the trust we place in these solutions, in ourselves and in each other.

                  * Aug. 31: Need a job?  A job recruiter from Sprint/PCS will be at the Kazen College Center from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to offer students information on employment opportunities.  The event is hosted by the LCC Employment Assistance Center.
