Whoever thinks barbells, body toning and cardio workouts are only for the physically young should meet Carlos Vara, 69, and Hector Barrera, 75.
The Laredo natives decided to get physical this summer by enrolling in a weight training class at Laredo Community College.
Twelve class days into the five-week summer term, the long-time buddies are on the pathway to a healthier lifestyle and enjoying their college experience.
“They (Vara and Barrera) are totally committed to the weight training course,” Dr. Sara Carrasco, kinesiology instructor, said. “They have so much energy and enthusiasm to learn and get fit. They usually are the first to arrive to class.”
Barrera joined the class after a college staff member informed him of the tuition-waivers available to LCC students who are 65 years or older. Barrera encouraged Vara to join him.
“I really enjoy the class. I keep feeling better every day after each workout,” Barrera noted.
Vara, who worked 35 years with Tex-Mex Railway until retiring in 1995, said that he has enjoyed leading an active lifestyle. The fitness class helps him stay active.
“You feel so good after exercising in class. I’m looking forward to continuing next session,” Vara said.
He added that senior citizens should be encouraged to take advantage of the fitness training that the college offers.
“Exercise is essential for everyone, regardless of age,” Vara said.
Adults who have physical-fitness interests similar to those of Vara and Barrera are invited to join the fitness bandwagon continuing in Summer Session II at LCC. An array of fitness and recreational classes will be offering during the second summer session, including Pilates, weight training, beginner’s/intermediate swimming, water aerobics, beginner’s tennis, power walking, and racquetball. Pilates, weight training, aerobics and introduction to physical fitness and sports will be offered at the LCC South campus.
Early registration is in progress through June 27 via the college’s On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system online at http://ole.laredo.edu and by telephone at 721-5100. Regular registration for all students is July 6 in the campus departments. Classes start July 7 and end on Aug. 10. The summer class schedule is available online at www.laredo.edu.
For more information about the fitness classes, contact the LCC Kinesiology Department at 721-5858. General information about Summer Session II registration may be obtained by calling the LCC Admissions/Registration Office at 721-5109 or 794-4110.
