The only way is up for high school students who join a unique state-funded program at Laredo Community College that prepares them for college, exposes them to rewarding career training and offers them a chance to earn a living.
High school students ages 16-21 are encouraged to apply for admission to LCC’s Project Step Up, a college-prep and career training program funded by the Texas Workforce Commission. The eight-week program meets at LCC Main and South campuses, Monday-Thursday from June 13-Aug. 4.
The program will consist of courses, career speaker presentations and college mentoring, as well as a hands-on learning experience by working in a college department and earning a total stipend of $800 during the eight-week program. Classes on job readiness and parenting skills also will be offered.
Students will be able to choose from a myriad of instruction, including law enforcement, health care, real estate math, welding, child development and auto mechanics, among others.
Business professionals from the community will be invited to share their life experiences with the participants. LCC students, members of the college’s G-Force, will serve as mentors for their younger counterparts and acquaint them with college life.
Additionally, Project Step Up participants will be assigned to a college department based on their career interests to gain rewarding job skills.
Project Coordinator Oscar Dominguez said that eligibility is determined by TWC based on family income. For more information, call Dominguez at 721-5105 or 235-9133.
