LCC offering ‘step up’ for students

High school students have an opportunity to train for rewarding careers and get paid for it with Project Step Up at Laredo Community College.

High school students ages 16 to 21 are encouraged to apply for admission to Project Step Up, a college-prep and career training program funded by the Texas Workforce Center.

The state-funded program will meet at the LCC main campus on Saturdays, Oct. 15 through May 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students will participate in six courses, including import/export industry, hospitality industry, personal finances, life coping skills, business communication and food service industry.

Felix Gamez, director of admissions and registration at LCC, said that eligibility is determined by TWC and based primarily on family income.  The applicant also must be in high school and be between the ages of 16 and 21.

Gamez indicated that participation comes with many rewards, including the opportunity to learn valuable job skills and receive a stipend for attending classes.

There also will be an opportunity to interact with students from other high schools and receive breakfast.

Applications are available at the TWC office at 2389 E. Saunders in Las Plazas center.  For more information, call Becky Perez or Lucy Valdez at the TWC office at 794-6500.
