LCC Pals to ‘Strike Out Katrina’ with baseball benefit;

top Mississippi college team to play

    Last month, the Palomino women’s volleyball team of Laredo Community College helped to “Spike Katrina” and serve up relief for hurricane victims at a celebrity volleyball benefit.

    Now the LCC men’s baseball team is continuing relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims at a “Strike Out Katrina” Baseball Benefit featuring four teams, including state champions Meridian Community College of the hurricane-affected Mississippi region.  The tournament is set for Oct. 28-29.

    The event, hosted in collaboration with the City of Laredo Parks and Recreation Department, will be held at Veterans Field.

    Admission will be a donation of $5 to get access to the entire two-day tournament.  Ticket holders can attend any of the 10 games using the same ticket.

    The participating teams will include the LCC Palominos, the Alvin Community College Dolphins of Alvin, Texas and the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College Scorpions of Brownsville.

    Under the sponsorship of the city of Laredo, the MCC Eagle baseball team, 2005 state champions of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges, also will play in the tournament.  Additionally, MCC Eagle Baseball’s Michael Murray was named the 2005 Division I Player and Athlete of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association.  MCC has made multiple appearances at the JUCO World Series, between 1993 and 2004.

    Troy Van Brunt, LCC athletic director, said the proceeds from the baseball benefit  will  be  donated  to hurricane  victim  relief  funds  established  by  the American Association of Community College and the NJCAA.

    “Laredo Community College is proud to spearhead another great effort to bring relief to the victims in the gulf coast region affected by Katrina,” said Van Brunt.  “We’re especially excited to bring one of the best college baseball teams in the nation to Laredo.

    “This will be a must-see thriller for all baseball fans.”
