LCC volleyball to host Summer Slam

High school volleyball teams will have an opportunity to test their athletic skills early at the first-ever Laredo Community College Summer Slam in July.

Sponsored by the LCC Palomino volleyball program, the Summer Slam is open to junior varsity and varsity teams from area high schools.  The JV tournament will be on Friday, July 29, while the varsity competition is on Saturday, July 30.  Both events start at 8 a.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium on the LCC Main campus.

“The tourney falls the weekend prior to the high school teams’ two-a-day practice sessions.  The kids usually are dying to start playing, so the LCC Summer Slam will give them a chance to get out there and play before practice starts,” Jennielle Strother, LCC volleyball head coach and event coordinator, said.

She added that the tournament offers the community a chance to preview all the teams for the upcoming season.

Strother said that the format for the tournament is basic.

“Both courts play at once.  Each court will have 4 to 5 teams in pool play, so there are only 8 to 10 spots available,” Strother explained.

The winning team from each tournament will be awarded a trophy.

High school coaches who desire to enter their team in the LCC Volleyball Summer Slam should call the LCC Athletic Department at 721-5326.  The tournament fee is $100 per team.  Proceeds from the fund-raiser benefit the Palomino volleyball team.

Office hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-7 p.m.
