LCC launches new partnership with area school districts

High school students can now earn college credit in several business and technology careers thanks to a new partnership between Laredo Community College and three area school districts.

Under the South Texas Tech Prep program, individual articulation agreements were signed by leaders from the LCC District, Laredo Independent School District, United Independent School District and Zapata County Independent School District on Thursday, May 19, at LCC’s Kazen Center.

With the agreements, the school districts will offer several courses at the high school level that students can apply toward several degrees or certificate at LCC, including Associate in Applied Science Degrees in Computer Drafting & Design Technology, Computer Electronics Technology, Diesel Engine Mechanics and Repair: Heavy Truck Specialization and Management-Real Estate; or the one-year Certificate in Automotive Collision Repair Technology.

The articulated courses at the high school level include: Accounting I, Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology I, Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology II, Auto Technology I, Basic Computer Technology, Engineering Computer-Aided Drafting, Introduction to Computer Maintenance, Marketing Dynamics and Technical Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting.

Through the articulation agreements, high school students can earn college credit hours that can be applied toward the selected programs of study at LCC.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to continue strengthening its partnership with Laredo area school districts to provide greater access to a higher education.  This is a rewarding opportunity  for  students  to  begin their college education while still in high school,” said LCC Vice-President for Instruction and Student Development Dr. Juan Maldonado.

LCC has established Tech Prep articulation agreements in several vocational/technical training programs with LISD, UISD, ZCISD, as well as the school districts of Rio Grande City and Crystal City.

Students can take the articulated courses as early as their junior year in high school.  Students must pass each course with a grade of 80 or better to receive college credit.

School officials recommend that students visit their school counselors to ensure that they are enrolled in the appropriate curriculum for the degree plan.

To claim the Tech Prep “credit-in-escrow,” the student must enroll at LCC within 15 months after receiving a high school diploma, declare a tech prep degree major, and complete six hours of non-developmental college credit within the appropriate program of study requirements at LCC.

For more information, parents and students may contact Tech Prep Director Ricardo Hinojosa by calling 721-5165 or by e-mail at richinojosa@laredo.edu.

New educational partnerships between LCC and LISD, UISD and ZCISD will bring new opportunities for high school students to earn college credit for several business and technology careers.  Leaders from the institutions are joined by educators and students attending a tech prep articulation agreement signing ceremony at LCC on Thursday.
