Ten-Year Timeline marks a decade of growth, achievements

1995

-- Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina becomes LCC’s fifth president.

 

 

-- LCC launches 10-year master plan for main campus.

 

 

-- The Yeary Library is extensively remodeled.

-- Ground breaks for the De la Garza Import/Export Building.

 

1996

-- A new college bookstore opens.

 

 

-- The De la Garza Import/Export Building opens.


 

 

-- First community health aide class graduates.

-- LCC acquires University Hall from the Texas A&M University System.

 

1997

 

 

-- LCC turns 50; celebrates with gala for its Top 50 Distinguished Alumni.


 

 

-- Yeary Library gets new automation system.

-- LCC launches associate degree program for the occupational therapy assistant.

 

1998

-- LCC receives $1 million state grant to launch distance learning.

 

 

-- LCC is first in region to introduce distance learning to area high school
   students.

 


 

-- The sports and recreation complex opens on the main campus.

-- LCC receives $100,000 grant from the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust for the environmental science center.

 

1999

-- Distance learning is expanded to include online classes.

 

 

-- The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center opens.

 


 

-- Phase III of campus infrastructure improvement projects is completed.

-- $2.1 million federal grant is awarded to expand the Cigarroa Science Building and establish an endowed scholarship program
    for science majors.

-- The D.D. Hachar Foundation donates $100,000 for the LCC early enrollment program.

 

 

-- The Corral becomes a high-tech computer lab.

 


 

-- LCC receives full accreditation for its associate degree nursing program.

-- LCC Board of Trustees selects site for LCC second campus in South Laredo.

 

2000 

 

-- LCC launches instructional television.

 

-- State appropriation of $250,000 arrives for LCC Second Campus planning.

-- Voting citizens of the city of Laredo approve the issuance of $50 million in bonds to finance the land acquisition and
    construction of a second LCC campus.

-- Ground breaks for new science laboratory building on the main campus.

-- Contract to purchase LCC Second Campus land from the Camilo Prada Family is signed.

-- LCC and the Daybreak Rotary Club announce a $100,000 scholarship endowment.

-- LCC launches Teacher Certification Program for technology educators.

-- LCC Citizens Advisory Committee raises $50,000 during fundraiser; 10 new members inducted to the LCC Distinguished
    Alumni.

 

 

 

-- The new Joaquin G. Cigarroa Science Laboratory Building opens.

 


 

 

-- LCC breaks ground for a new Fine Arts Center; receives $100,000 gift from the Guadalupe Martinez family.

 

 

-- LCC breaks ground for second campus in South Laredo

 

 

 

2001

 

 

-- LCC exceeds the rigorous standards of the Southern Association of Colleges
   and Schools and receives full re-accreditation for another 10-year period. 

 

 

 

2002

-- Fifty newly certified teachers are first to graduate from LCC’s Teacher Certification Program.

 

2003

-- LCC and TAMIU sign pact with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra for music education and performance.

-- The Laredo Community College Education Foundation is launched.

 

 

 

-- The Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center opens with
   fanfare.

           

 

 

2004

LCC South opens with Continuing Education and Protective
   Services classes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

-- April 16 - The seven buildings and bell tower at LCC South are
   dedicated with large community celebration highlighted by fireworks
   and mariachi music.

 

 

-- Music and Dance Building I is renamed the Manuel F. Llaguno Memorial Building to honor a donor and friend of the
   college.

-- LCC ranks among the nation’s Top 50 community colleges awarding the most associate degrees to Hispanic students.

 

 

 

-- The Camilo Prada Child Development Center opens at LCC
    South.

 

 

 

 

 

 

-- Aug. 30 - LCC South launches its first full semester of courses.
   The two-campus district posts a record enrollment of more
   than 9,000 students for fall semester.

 

 

 

-- LCC receives a $750,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to train child care workers in a
   career ladder program from certificates towards bachelor’s degrees.
 

2005

 

 

 

-- LCC breaks all previous enrollment records; spring enrollment at
   9,068.

 

 

 

-- First induction ceremony for National Adult Education Society is held.

-- LCC hosts a successful business luncheon fund-raiser featuring former Mexican presidential candidate Cuauhtémoc
   Cardenas Solórzano.

 

 

 

-- The Palomino men’s tennis team wins Laredo’s first national
   sports title.

 

 


 

 

-- LCC reaches an all-time high in Summer 2 enrollment from previous years.
