LCC offers more choices to make history with two-campus district

At the end of World War II, the Laredo Independent School District created Laredo Junior College in 1947 on the site of historic Fort McIntosh to prepare returning soldiers for America’s new workforce.  Since then, lives have been transformed and history has been made at Laredo Community College.

Today, the college is a two-campus district dedicated to ensuring that students of all ages and from all sectors of the community have the same opportunity to MAKE HISTORY by launching careers and new lives.

Each semester, the college breaks its own enrollment records, with a student population exceeding 9,000 for college credit programs, and hundreds more obtaining basic skills and preparation for the General Educational Development diploma.

“At Laredo Community College, our philosophy is to go beyond the standard, each day taking innovative steps to help more students find more avenues for success,” said Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, the college’s fifth president.

“The new second campus in South Laredo is helping LCC maintain its reputation for delivering a quality and accessible higher education for Laredo and the region,” Dovalina explained.

He added that innovative instruction and caring faculty are key components of the college mission, which ensures student success.  Through Laredo Community College, students can obtain:

-         Associate degrees in arts, science and applied science,

-         Technical/vocational certificates leading to immediate employment,

-         Coursework leading to a bachelor’s degree from any state university,

-         Teacher certification for elementary, middle school and high school grades (including a bilingual track),

-         Courses for personal enrichment,

-         Non-credit community interest and business/industry courses, and

-         Adult education for students returning to the classroom for English skills, job skills and GED training.

ADMISSIONS

The LCC District is committed to an open-door policy that guarantees opportunities for all types of students.  To better ensure that all citizens can educate themselves to the full extent of their abilities and needs, the college district encourages new students to seek the advice of an LCC counseling professional, who can provide guidance on courses, degree plans, potential transfers, and testing. Testing, which is required by state law for most students, also helps the college place students in the appropriate level programs.

For more information about the college admissions policy or testing dates, contact the Admissions Office at 721-5109 (794-4110 at LCC South) or the Assessment Center at 721-5418 (794-4418 at LCC South).

DISTANCE LEARNING

Improving access to education is an important goal at LCC.  The college’s Center for Distance Learning continues to implement innovative methods to deliver college instruction.

Internet online courses continue to grow in popularity with students of all ages. More than 80 online courses will be offered this fall, including accounting, art appreciation, English, government, history, import/export, kinesiology, psychology, sociology, speech, early childhood, computers, music appreciation, first aid, allied health, and Spanish, among much more.

Interactive videoconferencing brings students at remote sites into the classroom via real-time audio and video.  Through this system, the LCC classroom is connected with high schools in Laredo and other areas.

As a member of the Virtual College of Texas (VCT), LCC can help students find courses that they need and which aren’t included on the LCC class schedule.  Students can check the VCT website catalog at www.vct.org to find the course they need.  Then call the LCC-VCT course coordinator at 721-5871 or by email at distance@laredo.edu to initiate the registration process through LCC.  The virtual college course will be listed on an official LCC transcript just like any other LCC course.

High school students also have greater access to obtaining college credit ahead of schedule through early enrollment programs, which allow them to take college courses through the college’s distance learning program.  For more details, call the LCC Counseling Center at 721-5135 (794-4539 at LCC South).

The college also offers GED training via Time Warner Cable on Channel 17.  For more information, contact the LCC Adult Education Department by calling 721-5436.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Year after year, Laredo Community College is recognized as one of the top community colleges in the nation for helping Hispanic students achieve their career goals.

The college is an equal opportunity institution that takes pride in serving the region with quality instruction to help students of all ages, races, backgrounds and nationalities achieve a rewarding career through more than 80 programs of study.

The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which assures students attending LCC that they are receiving a first-class education for the most affordable price. LCC’s in-district tuition is one-third less compared to that of state universities.
