LCC boosts healthcare with more nurses

The future of Laredo’s healthcare system looks brighter than ever as 13 students graduated on Aug. 11 from the one-year nursing program at Laredo Community College, boosting the year’s total number of LCC nursing graduates to 68.

A traditional pinning ceremony to recognize candidates for graduation from the Vocational Nursing (VN) program was held in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center auditorium.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to produce more nursing graduates to satisfy the demand for this health occupation,” Dianna Miller, dean of health sciences, said.  “Their accomplishment reaffirms the college's commitment to produce highly skilled providers of care for the benefit of the region.”

Graduates of the summer 2005 VN class include Alberto Aguilar Jr., Martha E. Arzamendi, Brenda L. Cardenas, Anabelle Casarez, Herlinda A. Elizondo, Leonor Hill, Esmeralda Licea, Severiana Mendoza, Christina M. Ramos, Handa J. Sayi, Christina M. Soto, Tania Vazquez and Oscar Villarreal.

Herlinda Elizondo and Oscar Villarreal were the student speakers.

Highlights of the nursing ceremony was the presentation of two special honors highlighting student achievement, including the Merit Award, presented to Handa Sayi, and the Mary Alice Lopez award, given to Herlinda Elizondo

The Vocational Nursing Program at LCC is a clinically intensive one-year certificate program which offers classroom instruction and valuable clinical practice in four basic areas of nursing, including fundamentals, medical/surgical, maternity/pediatric and psychiatric.  Upon graduation, the vocational nursing student is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

The VN program is fully accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.  The application period for admission to the VN program is in progress.  For more information, call 721-5255.
