Nature lovers are invited to help maintain the beauty of a local nature trail and celebrate the commemoration of two earth-friendly observances on Saturday, April 9, at Laredo Community College’s main campus.
The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at LCC will host a Work Day from 8 a.m. to noon for the benefit of the Paso del Indio Nature Trail, a quarter-mile-long road that stretches along the banks of the Rio Grande on the north side of the LCC campus. The trail starts behind the LBVE Science Center.
As one of the community's nature trails, the Paso del Indio trail serves as a focal point of many local activities, ranging from bird watching to cross-country meets.
The Work Day also will serve as an opportunity for the community to celebrate two major environmental observances, including International Earth Day (observed on the first day of spring, March 20) and Arbor Day (observed nationally April 29).
Tom Miller, director of the LBVE Science Center, said the event is expected to receive support from several community organizations and businesses. Among the volunteers will be Cub and Boy Scout troops, high school and college students, 4H club members, and staff from the county district attorney’s office, among others.
“Laredo Community College invites people of all ages to the LCC Main campus to help us rejuvenate the Paso del Indio Nature Trail,” Miller said.
A nature trail adoption program also is available to help sustain the maintenance of the river trail. Sponsors—comprised of school groups, civic organizations, governmental agencies and private businesses—are currently participating in the adoption program. Space is still available for additional trail sponsors.
“At Saturday’s Work Day, you can sponsor a trail segment with your club, class or organization, or come unattached,” Miller noted.
He added that gloves, tools, water and lunch will be provided to volunteers.
The public also can support a student entrepreneurship activity, led by LCC students interning in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The interns will be selling native plants that help lower Laredo’s water consumption. A variety of trees, brushes, cacti and water lilies will be sold at the event.
