LCC library to host historical exhibits

The Harold R. Yeary Library at Laredo Community College will serve as host for a series of traveling historical exhibits on loan by the Webb County Heritage Foundation.

A reception to launch the presentation of the first two exhibits will be on Thursday, March 10, at 10 a.m. in the Yeary Library foyer.  The exhibits, part of a year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Laredo, include “Laredo Legacies: A Tribute to Our Past and a Legacy for Our Future,” “El Arte de la Charrería,” and the “History of Baseball in Laredo.”  At LCC, Laredo Legacies is on display through March, Arte de la Charrería from March to April, and History of Baseball in May.

Among the reception highlights are: a short presentation from WCHF Board President Dennis P. Kriewald, who is also an English instructor at LCC; and a special appearance by the Founder of Laredo, Captain Tomas Sanchez, portrayed by Rick Villarreal, director of the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum.   Admission is free and open to students, faculty, staff and community.

Laredo Legacies, said Christina Saucedo, archives manager of the WCHF, is a reproduction of a permanent exhibit on view at the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum in downtown Laredo.  It is a historical survey of the origins, people, industries, events and institutions that made up Laredo’s early history.

Arte de la Charrería is an exhibit based on a 1960 article that appeared in Artes in Mexico, which features paintings of Mexican hacienda culture by Ernesto Icaza and other, said Saucedo.  The exhibit depicts the activities, dress and way of life of the charro.

The third exhibit in May, History of Baseball in Laredo, recounts the presence of this popular sport in Laredo, which historians say dates back to the 1870s when it’s  believed to have been introduced to the region via the soldiers stationed at Fort McIntosh, said Saucedo.

The grounds of the former military installment have served as the home for the LCC main campus since its opening in 1947.
