The unique art form of cast paper will be showcased in an exhibition featuring the works of practicing artist/university art professor John Vinklarek at Laredo Community College.
The community is invited to view the artwork and meet the artist during an Opening Reception Wednesday, April 12 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Art Teaching Gallery on the north side of the main campus. Admission is free of charge.
Vinklarek’s exhibit, titled “Elemental Exceptions,” will feature an assortment of cast paper, a unique art form involving the process of pouring and pressing paper pulp into a mold.
The end result is a three-dimensional sculpture that Vinklarek paints.
And because of its lightness, the cast paper can be hung as a wall piece.
The exhibit at LCC will feature more than 20 of Vinklarek’s most recent works, including cast paper, cyanotype and mixed media, and serigraph.
Vinklarek is a longtime associate professor of art at Angelo State University in San Angelo.
A native of West Texas, Vinklarek joined the ASU faculty in 1977.
Along with the challenges of teaching a wide variety of courses, Vinklarek has continued his professional growth as a practicing artist.
Some examples of Vinklarek's work include a 1,000-foot mural for GTE in 1982, a monumental bronze for the San Angelo Fire Department erected in 1986, and an extended series of drawings with a bronze plaque for the Concho Valley Council of Governments completed in 1996.
Vinklarek regularly contributes to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art as a consultant as well as participating in the museum's Art Faculty shows.
Vinklarek is no stranger to Laredo’s art circles. He has won prizes in juried shows and has exhibited his work at the Laredo Center for the Arts.
“Elemental Exceptions” will be on display at LCC through May 11.
