Suzanne Ramo in recital Sunday at LCC

Experience the enthralling voice of soprano Suzanne Ramo in a special Faculty Recital at Laredo Community College Sunday, April 23.

Ramo’s performance, sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department, begins at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Ramo will perform highlights of popular works by master opera composers, including George Frideric Handel’s “Alcina,” several pieces from Richard Strauss, Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata,” Stefano Donaudy, Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Old Mail and the Thief” and more.

Ramo has launched a brilliant start to her career, receiving glowing praises from the San Francisco Chronicle for her work with the San Francisco Opera.

She debuted with the SFO as Woglinde and the Forest Bird in its 1999 Der Ring des Nibelungen Festival, and soon she was starring in the title role in "The Ballad of Baby Doe."

The Chronicle recognized Ramo for her “bright presence both vocally and theatrically” as well as her “formidable show of vocal technique and stage presence.”

She has toured as Violetta in "La Traviata" with SFO’s Western Opera Theater, and twice was chosen to participate in its Merola Program, where she sang Elvira in "L’Italiana in Algeri."

This season she was heard as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s "Cosi fan tutte" with the City Opera of the Quad Cities, and as Nayad in Richard Strauss’ "Ariadne auf Naxos" with the Tulsa Opera.

Ramo recently reprised her role of Violetta in "La Traviata" with the Amarillo Opera.

A 1998 national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, Ramo made her professional debut as Papagena during her apprenticeship with the Austin Lyric Opera.  She has since returned to Austin to perform in numerous other productions.

Ramo joined the faculty ranks at LCC in spring 2005 as an adjunct voice instructor before her selection as a full-time faculty member in the fall.  She is an instructor of applied voice, vocal diction and music appreciation.

Ramo has made her home in Laredo since 2002 with her husband, Dr. Fritz Gechter, who will provide musical accompaniment on the piano in this Sunday’s recital.

A native of Cheney, Wash., Ramo earned her bachelor arts in music from Whitworth College and her master of music from the University of Texas at Austin.
