During the week, Laredo Community College usually is occupied by thousands of students with a mission to study and to improve their lives for brighter futures.
The weekends normally bring a sense of calmness to the historic college campus.
However, activity will be unusually high this Sunday, April 23 as the LCC main campus welcomes a significant group of persons from across the community to address an important mission in society—the fight to eliminate birth defects.
More than 3,000 walkers are projected to help the March of Dimes fight prematurity by taking steps in the annual WalkAmerica at the college campus located at West End Washington Street.
Registration is at 8 a.m., followed by warm-ups and a five-mile walk at 9 a.m., encompassing a turn around the scenic college campus, through the overpass and onto the nearby historic downtown district.
Each year, WalkAmerica helps bring together a million compassionate people nationwide who care about saving babies.
Many who participate in the local event do it in the name of someone they love—a premature baby, a healthy baby, their own baby or the baby of a relative or a friend.
At LCC, many students, staff and faculty have dedicated countless years of service to help ensure the success of this major fund-raiser. The college campus has served as the host site for the past eight years.
Luciano Ramon is among the LCC family that strongly supports the March of Dimes.
Ramon, a longtime computer technology instructor and department chair, has been involved with the March of Dimes for 15 years for a special reason.
“One of the reasons I started supporting the March of Dimes stems from a childhood memory of when I had to take the polio vaccine,” Ramon said. “Although I was born healthy, the polio vaccine ensured that I would remain healthy in my adult life, and it’s why I got involved with the March of Dimes to help others experience healthy lives.”
A member of the March of Dimes Board and this year’s logistics chair for the event, Ramon is proud that many other LCC staff members and students share the same thoughts about the March of Dimes.
In past years, LCC has been recognized by the March of Dimes for raising significant amounts of contributions for this worthy cause.
This year, the March of Dimes hopes to raise at least $160,000 in contributions through walkers’ pledges, raffles, bucket brigades and other fundraisers.
Food, water, juices and music will be provided after the walk for those who participate in the event.
