There’s a seat reserved for Laredo when the Oxford Round Table convenes this month at England’s prestigious Oxford University.
Terri
R. Gonzalez, a longtime instructor and coordinator of the Occupational Therapy
Assistant Program at Laredo Community College, has been invited to be a
presenter at the Oxford Round Table Aug. 6-11.
Gonzalez will deliver a talk on “Enhancing Functional Performance in Elders with the Incorporation of Yoga Practice.”
Her presentation will explore the aging process and how the incorporation of yoga and occupational therapy can improve the quality of life.
The opportunity for Gonzalez to present occurred after her name was submitted on a recommendation and was accepted. She then was given the option to just attend the conference or to also present. Gonzalez submitted her proposal, which was accepted.
“I’m pleased to bring a highly relevant topic to the Oxford Round Table, which on this occasion is focusing on ‘Successful Aging.’ I look forward to the opportunity to share my ideas with college and university professors from all over,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez has addressed the topic in the classroom and has experienced success with her students who work with the elderly.
“The opportunity to participate in this international conference will allow me to share my experience with my students and to show them how education is a lifelong learning experience,” Gonzalez said.
The first meeting of the Oxford Round Table was in August 1989 to consider major issues in contemporary educational policy in the United States, the United Kingdom and other selected countries.
Membership was initially limited to ministers of education from several nations and some governors from the U.S.
The meeting was so successful that subsequent sessions were held.
Since then the Oxford Round Table has become highly desirable and even necessary to examine government policy issues at national and international levels.
In the latter part of the 1990s, the Round Table was expanded to consider important public policy matters bearing on human rights, law, economics, public finance and politics.
Today the Oxford Round Table brings select leaders in the public and private sectors and scholars to discuss government policy over a five-day period in a collegial, "think-tank" atmosphere.
Previous Oxford Round Tables have produced several books to convey varied approaches for improving government policy at institutional and governmental levels.
