Footsteps turned into student scholarships for some future Laredo Community College students, thanks to Justice of the Peace Hector Liendo and his walking shoes.
Judge Liendo hosted a College Walk on Saturday, Aug. 5 to raise scholarships for 10 students to attend LCC.
Several law enforcement officials and family members of the scholarship recipients were among the 100 walkers who participated in this unique scholarship fundraiser.
The idea for the benefit was born after Liendo took a stroll from the Northside Boys and Girls Club at 4500 Santa Maria Avenue to the Laredo Community College main campus at West End Washington Street. He said that it took him 5,280 steps to complete the walk between both locations.
On Saturday, Liendo hoped took those 5,280 steps from the boys and girls club to the LCC main campus with the hopes of raising $5,280 through pledges and contributions.
The walk began at 10 a.m. at the boys and girls club. It ended at approximately 11:30 a.m. at the college campus where walkers received refreshments.
The future LCC students who have been identified to receive a scholarship are Adriana Castillo, Reynaldo Diaz, Erica Elaine Escamilla, Margarita Herrera, David Jasso, Belinda Lizette Lares, Abigail E. Lozano, Mario Palacios, Felipe Ramirez IV and Amanda Saenz.
The scholarship recipients were selected based on an essay they wrote on why they wanted to pursue a college education.
Higher education in Laredo is getting a major boost Saturday, Aug. 5. From left, Justice of the Peace Hector Liendo, District V councilmember Johnny Rendon, Laredo Community College chief development officer Blas Castañeda and Judge Liendo’s administrative coordinator Eduardo Valdez gather in front of the LCC main campus entranceway to discuss plans for two major fundraisers benefiting student scholarships. Judge Liendo is hosting a College Walk that will start at 10 a.m. at the Northside Boys and Girls Club and wind down at 11:30 a.m. at the LCC main campus with refreshments. The goal is to turn 5,280 footsteps—the number of steps between both locations—into $5,280 for scholarships. Councilman Rendon is hosting a steak plate from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the corner of Calton and Springfield to support the District V Scholarship program that Castañeda founded in 1989 when he was a councilman for that district. The plates will sell for $5. The community is encouraged to support both events.
