Aspiring actors, singers sought for LCC stage

Want to be a star?

Aspiring actors, singers and aficionados of live theater have an opportunity to discover their talents by participating in two special audition sessions at Laredo Community College Aug. 22-23.

Gil Martinez Jr., instructor of the Acting I and II (DRAM 1351 and 1352) courses, will hold auditions for one-act plays on Tuesday, Aug. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 102.

Also, Dr. Joseph C. Crabtree, chair of the Performing Arts Department and director of the Opera Workshop, will conduct auditions for the fall production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera “The Gondoliers” Wednesday, Aug. 22.  The auditions will be conducted at the same time and location as Tuesday’s auditions.

High school and college students are invited to audition.

Martinez said, “I encourage interested students to audition for two small one-act plays I am planning to offer this fall at LCC.”

Crabtree said, “The Opera Workshop is looking for singers, actors and crew.  Please come prepared to sing a solo piece for the audition.  Limited scholarships are available.”

High school students who are interested in auditioning should first visit their high school counselor and obtain permission to concurrently enroll at LCC.  They should then go to the LCC Admissions/Registration Office to complete the process before the audition.

Martinez and Crabtree emphasized that interested persons must be able to sign up for the Acting or the Opera Workshop classes to participate in the shows.

Persons interested in backstage positions should submit a list of their backstage experience and interests, such as props, set-building or stage lighting.

For more information, contact the LCC Performing Arts Department at 721-5330.
