LCC to offer exciting percussion courses

March to the beat of a different drum this fall at Laredo Community College.

That’s because percussionists of all skills, including first-timers, have a unique opportunity to build their talents at LCC via two exciting percussion courses, including the city’s first indoor marching drumline class.

Registration for the fall 2006 semester is under way at LCC to enroll in Percussion Class 1 (MUSI1188M01) and Percussion Class 2 (MUSI1188MO2).  The new term starts Monday, Aug. 28.

The first section, meeting on Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-4:50 p.m., is a performance ensemble course with a focus on classical music and highly recommended for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education.

The second section, meeting on Tuesday and Thursday from 3-5 p.m., will focus on indoor marching percussion techniques and styles.  The class also is ideal for music majors, especially those with special interests in marching drumlines.

“Both percussion classes are recommended for music majors, but they are also open for personal enrichment,” percussion instructor Matthew Adams said.

Adams added that the drumline class will have a special opportunity to perform with internationally acclaimed drummer Gregg Bissonette during a special music concert in October at LCC.

Bissonette is best known for his ability to play in a wide variety of styles.  His credits range from the big band jazz of Maynard Ferguson to the hard rock of David Lee Roth to Britain’s loudest band, Spinal Tap.

Interested persons are encouraged to sign up for the percussion classes immediately as enrollment is limited to 30 students.

Registration is in progress through Aug. 21 via the On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system at http://ole.laredo.edu.  Students may register from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from a computer with Internet access at home, work or at designated OLÉ computer stations on campus.

On-campus registration and advising will be offered Tuesday, Aug. 22 from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. in instructional departments and the Counseling Center.  Students also may register via the OLÉ system from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.  Payment of tuition and fees is due by Aug. 22 for those who register between Aug. 18 and 22.

For more information about registration activities, call the LCC Admissions/Registration Office at 721-5109 or 794-4110.
