LCC, TAMIU students reach for the STARS

More than 100 students from Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University are reaching for the stars, thanks to the South Texas Academic Rising Scholars (STARS) Foundation. The Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center at LCC was the site for the annual STARS scholarship presentation Aug. 17 to recognize students who have demonstrated financial need and achievement in academics, leadership in extracurricular activities and civic involvement. At LCC, 59 students received the scholarships, thanks to a $50,000 gift from the STARS Foundation and a matching contribution from LCC for a total of $100,000. A similar matching contribution for scholarships also benefited TAMIU students. On hand to recognize the scholarship recipients were Steve LaMantia of L&F Distributors and a member of the STARS Foundation Board of Directors, LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas and TAMIU President Dr. Ray Keck.
