Higher education will soon have its own wheels to travel through the streets of Laredo.
The Public Benefit Program of the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) has awarded a grant of $144,295 to the South Texas Tech Prep Consortium and its fiscal agent, Laredo Community College, to create a “Go Get It” Mobile Go Center.
The initiative is part of the College for Texans Campaign, led locally by the P-16 Council, to support the state’s Closing the Gaps efforts to draw an additional 630,000 Texans into colleges and universities by 2015.
South Texas Tech Prep director Ricardo Hinojosa indicated that the Mobile Go Center will serve as a unique tool to provide an array of college information, motivation and assistance to virtually all populations in the area.
“This mobile unit will be able to reach out to middle school students, high school students and the community as a whole, as well as outlying areas within our service area,” Hinojosa said.
The 34-ft.-long trailer will be equipped with 14 lab units with computer laptops and provide access to an array of online services, including the Texas Common Application for admissions to higher education institutions and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The trailer will be pulled by a one-ton pick-up truck that also will be funded through the implementation grant.
The Mobile Go Center also will contain college catalogs, scholarship and grant applications and information to enroll at LCC and many other higher education institutions.
“The goal of the Mobile Go Center is to reach out to students and the community and provide them with comprehensive information on how to access a college education,” Hinojosa said.
The Mobile Go Center is expected to be fully operational by February 2007.
The South Texas Tech Prep-Laredo Community College Mobile Go Center will provide access for students and their families to obtain a college education. The mobile unit is expected to hit the streets in February 2007.
