March to the beat of a different drum this spring at Laredo Community College.
Percussionists are invited to audition for a spot with the Laredo Grenadiers of LCC on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 101.
Matthew Adams, director of the Laredo Grenadiers, encourages percussionists of all skills, including first-timers, to build their talents at LCC by becoming a member of the city’s first collegiate indoor marching drumline.
“There are openings in all sections of the drumline, so students can audition for snare drum, bass drum, tenor drum or front ensemble, including mallets and accessory percussion,” Adams said.
For the audition, students will be required to perform warm-up exercises that demonstrate different techniques of drumming. These materials can be obtained from Adams.
Members of the Laredo Grenadiers will meet as part of a class that is scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Students will be required to attend the rehearsals and practice, in addition to outside individual practice.
The Laredo Grenadiers also will perform throughout the semester on- and off-campus.
Adams noted that the class is ideal for music majors, especially those with special interests in marching drumlines.
“Drum set players can strongly benefit from the drumline course because it helps to build their technique,” Adams said.
Registration for the Spring 2007 semester is under way at LCC at http://ole.laredo.edu. For more information, call Adams at 721-5332.
The Laredo Grenadiers is the newest student performance ensemble at Laredo Community College that has become a popular entertainment attraction at college and civic events. Opportunity is available to be part of this exciting percussion group by participating in auditions on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 101.
