LCC awards $20,000 in Merit Awards to students

A new initiative at Laredo Community College is rewarding student success…literally.

This semester, 41 students from all areas of instruction are the recipients of the first-ever President’s Merit Award.

Students were nominated by faculty from all instructional departments to single out the fall semester’s top scholastic achievers.

Depending on the number of scholarships each department awarded, scholarships ranged from $400 to $500 for a grand total of $20,000.

LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina said that the initiative is a valuable incentive to encourage students to go that extra mile in their studies.

“Scholarships are normally awarded at the beginning of the term,” Dovalina said.  “But on this occasion, Laredo Community College opted to present the Merit Awards at the end of the fall semester to recognize scholastic achievement.  The merit awards may be used by the recipients at their own discretion.”

The Merit Award recipients include Abelardo Salazar (Electrical Technology), Lauro Perez (Heating, A/C and Refrigeration), Claudia Hechter (Child Development), Rebecca Guadalupe Sanchez (Early Childhood Education), Maria de la Luz Hernandez (Computer Information Systems), Jose A. Pantoja (Computer Aided Drafting), Ramona Torres (Office Systems), Karina Aide Ramos (Accounting), Jan Demasiado (Associate Degree Nursing), Jessica Solis (Nursing Assistant), Desiree Martinez (Medical Lab Technology), Jessica M. Morales (Kinesiology), Alejandro Medina (Biology), Gabriella Roque Acuna (Psychology), Jorge Alberto Limon (Automotive), Jose Alvardo (Auto Body Collision Repair), Adrian Chavera (Math), Krystle Brito (Reading/Communication Studies) and Gina Gamez (English).

Hinojosa, Gracie Lara and Jose Angel De Leon, Dance; Josue Perez, Alejandro Cavazos, Marianne Garcia, Ricardo Salazar, Tiffany Santos, Stephen Miller, Ana Uribe and Jamie Elizabeth Mitchell, Music; Margot Paz and Hacel Arias, Drama; Leonard L.
