Tuition aid for senior adults, veterans available at LCC

Plenty of financial aid is available at Laredo Community College for recent high school graduates and adults to embark on a new career or enrich their lives.

But there also is assistance geared specifically for senior citizens and for military veterans and their families to go to college.

SENIOR CITIZEN EXEMPTION

A state law makes it possible for persons age 65 and over to receive free tuition for up to six college credit hours at any public higher education institution in Texas.

“At Laredo Community College, we offer a senior citizen scholarship that not only covers the cost of tuition, but it also covers the cost of course fees,” Bursar Norma Cano said.

Cano added that senior adults can use the scholarship to enroll in any subject and apply the college credit toward a certificate or degree, or just for personal enrichment.

To receive the senior citizen scholarship, students must go through the college’s admissions process, register for the classes and present a state photo ID card at the Bursar’s Office to receive the exemption.

Cano noted that the senior citizen scholarship at LCC is becoming more and more popular each year. The number of students who took advantage of the exemption grew from 34 in 2004-05 to 42 in 2005-06.

For more information about the senior citizen scholarship, interested persons should call the Bursar’s Office at 721-5112 after Jan. 8, when the college reopens its offices.

VETERANS BENEFITS

LCC also works closely with Veteran Affairs to provide an educational assistance allowance, counseling and other services to active military personnel, veterans and their family members.

“Students who fall under this category (military) may qualify for assistance under one of various chapters that provides federal assistance.  Laredo Community College can help these students complete their application and provide them with information they may need to get into college,” said Veronica Hernandez, international student and veteran coordinator.

She added that veteran eligibility requirements are reviewed for approval by the regional Veteran Affairs Office.

For more information, students may call Hernandez at 764-5768.

On campus registration for the Spring 2007 semester at LCC main and south campuses resumes Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Students who have declared a major at the Admissions/Registration Office can get advised and registered at the instructional department that corresponds to their major.

First-time students and those who have not declared a major should report to the Counseling Center at either campus.
