LCC Fun Fest a popular WBCA tradition

Plenty of fun, food and fanfare will be available for the entire family to enjoy at the annual Laredo Community College Family Fun Fest and Musicale Saturday, Feb. 11.

The outdoor celebration will be from 12 to 5 p.m. on the downtown campus grounds next to the Maravillo Gymnasium.

Admission to this family-friendly event is free of charge.

The Fun Fest—a popular Washington’s Birthday tradition since 1988—will offer an array of excitement and entertainment under the sun for the young and young at heart.

Since 2004, Fun Fest has experienced tremendous success under the sole leadership of LCC.

The crowds continue to grow each year as hundreds of fest-goers engulf the college campus to enjoy an array of activities, spicy foods and attractions for kids, teens and adults.

“Laredo Community College has enjoyed its longtime association with WBCA and is proud to build on that tradition by hosting the annual LCC Family Fun Fest and Musicale,” college president Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina said.  “When the college assumed the leadership reins of this event in 2004, we decided to expand its scope by adding more music and more fun events for teens and adults.  Of course, we kept the popular ponies, petting zoo and kiddie fun.  LCC has developed the perfect formula to offer fun for the entire family.”

As part of the fest, LCC features a Musicale showcasing a cultural extravaganza of the vibrant growth in the college’s performing arts programs and talent from the community.

This year's Musicale presents chorale, guitar and percussion performances, a clown show, and dance performance in various styles, including modern, jazz, traditional, cheerleading, hip-hop and belly dancing.

Other highlights of this cultural extravaganza will showcase interactive demonstrations in aikido and aerobics from the college's Kinesiology Department.

College departments also are participating in the fest by hosting fun games and activities for all to enjoy.  Among the highlights are a math twister game courtesy of the Math Department, optical illusion and paper plane experiments courtesy of the Science Department, an art collage from the LCC South Child Development Center, a tractor trailer exhibit courtesy of Workforce Development and an auto technology demo from the Industrial Trades Department.

Faculty and staff will operate the booths, making it an ideal opportunity to obtain information about programs of study and college enrollment.

Various LCC student organizations and clubs will operate food concessions and fun games for the whole family.  Among the popular activities featured are pop-a-balloon, duck pond, bean bag toss, cake walk, puppet show, and more.  The Fun Fest also will feature various traditional delicacies and carnival fare to satisfy the palate, including enchiladas mexicanas, gorditas, tacos de pollo, steak sandwiches, turkey legs, funnel cakes, cotton candy, roasted corn and much more.

Additionally, the Laredo Children’s Museum, on the college campus next to the Fun Fest grounds, will offer an array of activities and exhibitions.  In celebration of the Fun Fest, admission to the museum will be at a reduced price.

Spend a fun and exciting afternoon with the entire family on the LCC campus.  Don’t miss the third annual LCC Family Fun Fest and Musicale.
