A tribute focusing on the contributions of black Americans is under way at Laredo Community College as students, faculty and staff commemorate Black History Month.
To raise awareness about the contributions made by African Americans from the past and those who will continue to make history well into the future, the LCC Student Activities Office led an effort to get students to research and gather information on individuals to create posters for display in the student centers at both main and south campuses.
Among the 20 individuals in the spotlight are historian/political activist William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, abolitionist Harriet Tubman, singer/composer Marvin Gaye, activist Malcom X, U.S. army general Colin Powell, Baptist minister/civil rights leader Martin Luther King, writer/singer/dancer/activist Maya Angelou and civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
“The student advocates and members from some student clubs compiled the information on individuals from the African American community who are or have served as an inspiration for all,” Priscilla Medina, director of student activities, said.
Other activities include the presentation of special movie screenings for four films dedicated to Black History Month at both campuses.
The screenings began last week with the presentation of “Amistad” at the main campus and “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” at LCC South.
Next up on the movie line-up will be “Beauty Shop” on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the Kazen College Center, room 119, and “Crash” at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Billy Hall Student Center community suite. Admission is free for LCC students.
The college will conclude its month-long observance of Black History Month with a special presentation featuring former MTV “Real World” star and diversity consultant Mohammed Bilal.
Bilal, who has helped thousands of people move beyond the sheer tolerance of difference, will speak about “12 Steps Towards Accepting Diversity” Monday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. in the Kazen College Center and again on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. in the Billy Hall Student Center.
His presentation is fun and interactive, “sprinkled with scholarship, hip-hop, and self-reflective narratives that equip the audience with easy, valuable, and powerful tools for appreciating the wondrous diversity around us.”
Admission to both presentations is free and open to LCC students and the community.
