Dr. Mary Grace Carroll and Luis Enrique Casal, gifted educators and talented professional musicians, are part of a music collaboration sharing center stage at Laredo Community College Thursday, Feb.23.
Together, they will be the featured performers of the first LCC/VMT Combined Faculty Recital. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater on the main campus.
Carroll has been a longtime music instructor at the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts, while Casal is one of the newest music faculty members at LCC.
Admission to the recital is free and open to the public.
Casal and Carroll will begin the program with the performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sonata for violin and piano No. 9 in A major, Op. 47,” better known as the ‘Kreutzer’ sonata.
After the three-movement piece, the recital will continue with Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Sonata for violin and piano No. 1 in D minor, Op. 75.”
Carroll holds a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. The Corpus Christi native completed a master’s degree in piano performance from the Catholic University of America and bachelor of music degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
She has appeared at the Texas Jazz Festival, is a Distinguished Alumnus of TAMU-CC and holds a place in Del Mar College’s Hall of Fame.
In 2003, Carroll was named a recipient of the Ford Motor Company “Salute to Excellence in Education” award. She has held university teaching positions in Louisiana and Florida.
Carroll is on the board of director of the Laredo Musical Theatre International, and is an adjudicator for the National Guild of Piano Teachers, the Federation of Music Clubs and the Texas Music Teachers Association.
Casal teaches violin and viola at LCC and is the principal violist to the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra.
A native of Panama, where he is regarded as one of that nation’s leading violinists and violists, Casal has represented his homeland around the world, including Japan, England, Paris, Italy and the United States.
Casal has taught violin at the National Institute of Music in Panama and has delivered numerous lectures and master classes at the School of Fine Arts of the National University of Panana and at the Catholic University of Panama.
He has been a featured soloist with the National Symphony of Panama, the Chamber Orchestra of the National University of Panama and the Youth symphony of Panama, among others.
Casal’s strong interest in Panamanian folk music led him to record with Panamanian folk guitarist Gustavo Salamin a CD entitled Musica de Camara Folclorica Panameña.
