In an age where modern technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, Laredo Community College has created a fast track avenue to become a computer maintenance technician in less than four months.
This spring, LCC launches a one-semester certificate program in Computer Maintenance through the Computer Technology Department at its south campus, 5500 South Zapata Highway.
The 16-hour college credit program was created with exit points that can lead to immediate employment or to the advancement of a one-year certificate or a two-year associate’s degree.
“The goal is to fill a demand for computer maintenance technicians and to help in attaining a strong foundation in computer electronics,” Luciano Ramon, computer technology department chair, said.
The semester-long program consists of four courses, which a student can take at their own pace.
“Provided that state-mandated requirements for college readiness are met, the student can take all four courses in one semester or take one to two courses each semester. The four courses are offered every semester,” Ramon explained.
The courses to fulfill the requirements for the semester-long certificate program are: DC/AC Circuits (CETT 1409), Digital Fundaments (CETT 1425), Introduction to Computer Technology (CPMT 1403) and Introduction to Computer Maintenance (CPMT 1411).
Classes are being taught both day and evening at LCC South.
Fred Solis, dean of workforce education, said that the college hopes to offer the one-semester certificate program soon to high school students for dual credit, similar to the programs currently offered in Diesel and Computer Information Systems to Lyndon B. Johnson High School students.
Today (Jan. 17) is the last day to register for the computer maintenance courses at LCC South. Late registration is from 2 to 7 p.m.
