Support for the Rio Grande River Basin
Federal support in the form of $150,000 to develop a study of the Rio Grande River Basin was announced by Congressman Henry Cuellar Tuesday at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at Laredo Community College. The funds, awarded to the City of Laredo, were secured from the House Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill of 2006. The goal of the river study is to prevent potential flooding and to restore the basin’s ecosystem. Cuellar, who touted the funding for the study as a collaborative initiative, was joined by leaders from the city of Laredo, the city of Rio Bravo and the college, from left, Rio Bravo Mayor Juan Gonzalez, Laredo councilman Juan Ramirez, LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, Cuellar, Laredo councilman Johnny Rendon, LBVESC Director Tom Miller and local environmentalist/retired LCC biology instructor Dr. Jim Earhart.
