Enrollment step offers brighter futures at LCC
Students in a quest for a brighter future at the "College of Champions" should seek advising for the fall 2006 semester beginning Monday, July 17 at Laredo Community College main and south campuses.
Felix Gamez, director of Admissions/Registration at LCC, said that faculty advising offers students an opportunity to create a degree plan that charts their future at the college and beyond.
“Faculty advising at LCC is like a roadmap that guides a student on the pathway to earning a certificate, associate's degree or the transfer degree requirements to pursue a bachelor's degree at an upper-level university,” Gamez said.
Advising is a necessary option for students who are unable to self advise for classes. Students are classified as "self-advised" if they have earned at least nine college-level semester hours of credit, have met college level readiness in English, reading and mathematics, have a declared major on file with the admissions/registration office and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
Advising will be available to new and returning students Monday-Thursday, July 17-20 and Monday-Wednesday, July 24-26 from 1 to 6 p.m.
Students who have declared a major with the Admissions/Registration Office should visit the department office that corresponds to their major. Walk-ins are welcome or an appointment for advising may be scheduled.
Advising for most programs of study is available at both campuses. However, students should note that advising activities for certain instructional programs will be conducted at specific campuses:
* At LCC main campus only- allied health and nursing, performing arts (formerly music/dance), electrical technology, heating/air conditioning, refrigeration technologies, major appliance installer/repairer, military science and welding;
* At LCC South only- automotive-collision repair technology, automotive technology/technician, computer electronics, diesel engine mechanics, protective services and child development.
Students who are undecided about their major should report to the counseling center at either campus.
Those who take advantage of advising may register online for fall semester classes now through Wednesday, Aug. 16.
Hundreds of day, evening and distance learning classes are scheduled to be offered at the college’s main and south campuses.
Students may view the fall 2006 class schedule and register for the new term by logging on to the college's On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system at http://ole.laredo.edu. The system is available from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Students who register between July 10 and Aug. 16 have until Thursday, Aug. 17 to pay their tuition and fees by 5 p.m. at the Bursar's Office at either campus.
Payment with a major credit card will be accepted until 11 p.m. on Aug. 17 via the OLÉ web system.
For more information about advising, call the Counseling Center at 721-5135 (main) or 794-4135 (south).
