Rewarding incentives for future teachers at LCC

Picture yourself with a free laptop.

A federally funded program is making that dream a reality for students interested in pursuing a teaching career this fall at Laredo Community College main and south campuses.  The deadline to apply for admission to this program has been extended to Monday, July 31.

Recent high school graduates and college freshmen are encouraged to apply for the innovative student initiative that will offer free computer laptops, educational software and much more to its participants.

The program also will offer writing seminars, summer workshops on writing and more.

“There’s still an opportunity for future teachers to join this rewarding program at Laredo Community College, especially at the south campus,” said Luis Garza, Title V cooperative grant activity director.  “The program will offer many incentives to its participants, including the opportunity to receive a free computer laptop with cutting-edge educational software to keep even after finishing the program.”

Students must submit their applications for the “Hispanic Students Success Initiative: Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers Today” and meet the requirements of the review process by July 31.

The program is open to college freshmen attending LCC, and to May 2006 high school graduates.  To obtain an application for admission to the program or for more information, call Garza at 721-5404 or 721-5823.

The five-year project is funded by a $3.25 million Title V cooperative grant from the U.S. Department of Education, led by Texas A&M International University and its partner, Laredo Community College.

To participate in the program, the student must be an education major and plan to transfer to TAMIU after completing an associate in arts degree at LCC.

Other eligibility requirements will help determine program participation.
