LCC explores quality of life issues

Leaders from Laredo Community College met recently with city and county officials as part of a continuing effort to unite forces for the advancement of quality of life issues.

LCC chief development officer Blas Castañeda explained that the college has been meeting with local government officials to explore the potential of collaborating on matters dealing with the economy, education, workforce and more.

“The goal is to work together and to maximize the use of existing funds for the benefit of citizens,” Castañeda said.

He said that LCC is working currently with the city of Laredo, Webb County and LISD officials on the possibility of creating sports complexes at the college’s main and south campuses.

“The college is working with these entities to examine the idea of building these athletic facilities for joint use by students and residents,” Castañeda said.

As part of the continuing talks, LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina and Castañeda met recently with county commissioner Jerry Garza and new councilmember Dr. Michael Landeck.

Earlier this year, LCC officials also met with county commissioner Frank Sciaraffa.

Dovalina praised government leaders for the interest they have shown in exploring the possibility of working together for the greater good of the region.

“It’s encouraging to know that there is a real opportunity to maximize our financial resources through partnerships to address issues relating to economic development and quality of life amenities,” Dovalina said.
