LCC to offer exciting percussion courses

Percussionists can march to the beat of a different drum this fall at Laredo Community College.

That’s because percussionists of all skills, including first-timers, have a unique opportunity to build their talents at LCC via two exciting percussion courses, including the city’s first indoor marching drumline class.

Advising and registration for the fall 2006 semester is under way at LCC to enroll in Percussion Class 1 (MUSI1188M01) and Percussion Class 2 (MUSI1188MO2).  The new term starts Monday, Aug. 28.

The first section, meeting on Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-4:50 p.m., is a performance ensemble course with a focus on classical music and highly recommended for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education.

The second section, meeting on Tuesday and Thursday from 3-5 p.m., will focus on indoor marching percussion techniques and styles.  The class also is ideal for music majors, especially those with special interests in marching drumlines.

“Both percussion classes are recommended for music majors, but they are also open for personal enrichment.  Drum set players can strongly benefit from the drumline course because it helps to build their technique,” percussion instructor Matthew Adams said.

Adams was a two-year member of the Westchester University Drumline in Westchester, Penn.  The ensemble is recognized nationally as the East Coast’s premier drumline.

Adams added that the drumline class will have a special opportunity to perform with internationally acclaimed drummer Gregg Bissonette during a special music concert in October at LCC.

Bissonette is best known for his ability to play in a wide variety of styles.  His credits range from the big band jazz of Maynard Ferguson to the hard rock of David Lee Roth to Britain’s loudest band, Spinal Tap.

Interested persons are encouraged to sign up for the percussion classes immediately as enrollment is limited to 30 students.

Auditions will be conducted prior to the start of class for placement purposes.

“There is a wide array of percussion instruments available to assign students to a spot within each class,” Adams noted.

Faculty advising is available July 24-26 from 1-6 p.m. in instructional departments and the counseling center.  Music majors and any others interested in enrolling in the percussion classes should visit the Performing Arts Department in Music and Dance Building #2.  For more information about the courses, call 721-5330.

Registration is in progress through Aug. 16 via the On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system at http://ole.laredo.edu.   Students may register from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from a computer with Internet access at home, work or at designated OLÉ computer stations on campus.  For more information about registration activities, call 721-5109 or 794-4110.
