LCC welding program aids construction boom

Laredo’s construction boom is good news for the local welding industry.

That’s because future welders have a fast track option at Laredo Community College to learn the techniques most commonly found in today’s industry.

Interested persons seeking a pathway to this occupation can jumpstart their future this fall at LCC.  Advising and registration for the new term, which starts Monday, Aug. 28, is under way.

Among the welding courses LCC is offering this fall are Introduction to Layout and Fabrication (WLDG1417M01), Introduction to Oxy-Fuel Welding (WLDG1425M01) and Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SLDG1528M01).

The LCC Welding program is a one-year certificate program that provides students with a working knowledge in the field.

Introduction to Layout and Fabrication, which meets Monday and Tuesday from 2-3:40 p.m., is a fundamental course that focuses on structural shapes and use in construction within the welding industry.

Introduction to Oxy-Fuel Welding, meeting Monday through Thursday from 3:50-5:20 p.m., offers a view into the history and future of welding.  It also covers safety, setup and maintenance of oxy-fuel welding, among other topics.

Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding, scheduled to meet Monday through Thursday from 7:20-9:40 p.m., offers an overview of this welding process.  The course focuses on power sources, electrode selection, oxy-fuel cutting and various joint designs.

Prospective students can launch their futures by taking advantage of faculty advising July 24-26 from 1-6 p.m. in instructional departments and the counseling center.  Welding students should visit the Welding program in the Hachar Vocational Building, room 141.  For more information about the courses, call Welding Instructor Jorge Bernal at 721-5396.

Registration is in progress through Aug. 16 via the On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system at http://ole.laredo.edu.   Students may register from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from a computer with Internet access at home, work or at designated OLÉ computer stations on campus.  For more information about registration activities, call 721-5109 or 794-4110.
