The world’s a stage this fall at LCC

The world’s a stage for aspiring actors this fall at Laredo Community College.

Two exciting drama courses, including one focusing on the history of theater and another on acting, are slated to be offered during the fall 2006 semester at LCC, which starts on Monday, Aug. 28.

Registration is under way to sign up for An Introduction to the Theater (Drama Appreciation) (DRAM 1310) and Acting I and II (DRAM 1351 and 1352).  The courses will be taught by veteran drama instructor Gil Martinez Jr.

DRAM 1310 offers a history of theater and much more, minus the task of stage lights and live performance.  The class will meet Monday and Wednesday from 12 to 1:20 p.m.

“The class deals with all aspects of theatre history, ranging from the early Greek period to contemporary times,” Martinez said.  “For students who aren’t looking to work on a stage, they should know that this is a non-performance course, and it can satisfy their visual and performing arts requirement in the core curriculum inventory,” Martinez noted.

For those with hopes of being the next Brad Pitt or Cameron Diaz, consider enrolling in DRAM 1351 or 1352.  Both classes will meet Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m.

Martinez said that students will learn the basics of acting and learn how to build sets, create costumes and work with make-up, among other aspects of this industry.

“Acting I and II will offer a comprehensive view on the art of theater,” Martinez said.  “The students will be required to perform in a play and be involved in other aspects of live theater.

Registration is now in progress through Aug. 16 via the On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system at http://ole.laredo.edu.  Students may register from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from a computer with Internet access at home, work or at designated OLÉ computer stations on campus.
