LCC offers connection to college life

College life can be intimidating for first-time students, but a unique orientation program at Laredo Community College is available to help lessen those college freshmen jitters by arming students with the resources and knowledge needed for success.

LCC is signing up college freshmen for three sessions of the College Connection, a new-student orientation program set for June 27 and 28 at the LCC Main campus, and on June 29 at LCC South.

Each session meets from 2-5 p.m.  Participation is free and open to first-time college students and those with less than six college semester hours.

LCC looks forward to welcoming college freshmen at the College Connection, Lisa Gonzalez, counselor and main campus event coordinator, said.

“The College Connection is an annual orientation program for new students to learn how college works,” Gonzalez said.  “Our College Connection staff is looking forward to getting students connected to college life.”

Gonzalez said that the orientation at the main campus will begin at the Cigarroa Science Building, room 126, with a presentation offering advice and recommendations on how to succeed in college.  Time management, class schedules, grade point averages, college credit hours and other related topics will be discussed.

College Connection also will offer students an opportunity to get acquainted with LCC’s On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system and to be the first to register early for the fall 2006 semester.

“Counselors and faculty will be available to offer academic and career advising, and college staff will be ready to assist students with the OLÉ system to register early for classes,” Gonzalez said.

Following the general presentation, students will be escorted to the campus building that corresponds to their major of study.

“This is a new feature to help students familiarize themselves with the campus, particularly the building that relates to their academic or vocational/technical major,” Gonzalez said.

Additionally, students at the main campus event will have an opportunity to win one of two $250 scholarships courtesy of Wachovia, a financial service company.

At LCC South, lead counselor and event organizer Raquel Lopez said that students will congregate at the Billy Hall Student Center to listen to a general presentation.  They also will enjoy refreshments and have an opportunity to win door prizes and a $500 scholarship from Wachovia.

“After this, the students will be directed to their respective departments for their declared major for advising.  Since some instructional programs are located at the main campus only, we will have advisors for those departments in the Billy Hall Student Center community suite where students can be advised,” Lopez said.

To participate in the College Connection, students must complete the easy admission and assessment process.  For more information, call the LCC Counseling Center at 721-5135 (main campus) or at 794-4135 (south campus).

Applications for admission to LCC are available at the Admissions/Registration Office, located in Memorial Hall, room 125, and Billy Hall Student Center, room 113, at LCC South.

To take the assessment exam, call 721-5418 or 794-4418, or visit the LCC Assessment Center at Memorial Hall, room 130 or Billy Hall Student Center, room 245.

The assessment exam is a valuable guide for new students to map out their road to a college education by determining their strengths and weaknesses in reading, English and mathematics. The assessment exam is free of charge to students.
