Young fans of volleyball have an opportunity to expand their talents in this sport this summer.
Laredo Community College is hosting a summer volleyball camp led by Binny Canales, LCC’s new volleyball coach.
The camp will meet Monday through Thursday, July 17-20, at the Maravillo Gymnasium on the main campus.
A session for elementary school children will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., while middle- and high school-age campers will convene from 1 to 5 p.m. Canales invites boys and girls to participate in the volleyball camp.
“The summer volleyball camp will offer an opportunity to build your talents and learn new skills, as well as have fun meeting new friends,” Canales said.
The camp fee is $60 and it includes a camp T-shirt.
To sign up for the camp, parents may visit the Athletic office, located in the Maravillo Gymnasium, room 152, or call Canales at 206-3659 for more information. Summer office hours at LCC are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In April, Canales was hired as the head coach of the Lady Palomino volleyball team.
Canales was head coach of the Palomino program from 1997 to 2001, before accepting an offer to start the volleyball program at Texas A&M International University in 2002.
During his initial tenure at LCC he made impressive strides to help the Lady Palominos achieve back-to-back, 30-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, including a ninth-place ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I rankings in his final season with the LCC volleyball program.
At TAMIU, Canales built a highly competitive volleyball program, too, compiling an impressive list of accomplishments that included a Red River Athletic Conference West Division title.
