The Senator Judith Zaffirini Library at Laredo Community College will soon get a boost in educational materials for its students and visitors thanks to federal support totaling $100,000.
U.S. Congressman Henry Bonilla recently announced that funding for the LCC South library and other Laredo-area projects has been secured through his membership with the Appropriations Committee, which oversees all of the nation’s funding.
The Committee on Appropriations approved Bonilla’s total funding request of $1.6 million in the Fiscal Year 2007 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill, which is scheduled to go to the House floor for consideration this week.
The funding designated for the Zaffirini Library is good news for students, faculty, staff and community who utilize the wealth of information and educational resources found at the state-of-the-art facility, LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina explained.
“Laredo Community College appreciates Congressman Henry Bonilla’s goal to secure federal funding for the continued development of the LCC South campus,” Dovalina said.
He added, “Since its opening in 2004, LCC South has received significant federal funding support thanks to the efforts of Congressman Bonilla and his commitment to higher education and his goal to provide better educational opportunities for the future of South Laredo.”
Bonilla believes that the Zaffirini Library is an “educational clearinghouse for the surrounding community” that will offer many long-term benefits to the students and to the community it serves.
“The students of Laredo Community College are preparing to enter the workforce and are the future of our community’s economic success,” Congressman Bonilla said. “This funding will help provide the educational tools necessary for the students of today to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
LCC library director Tom LaFleur expressed his gratitude to the congressman for securing funding that will allow the south campus library to expand its role as a source of learning for students, faculty and community to access.
“The funding will provide Laredo Community College with the opportunity to supply the Zaffirini Library with much-needed educational tools, including literature materials, computer technology and software and much more,” LaFleur said.
Bonilla noted that the funding also will support the development of new outreach programs to maximize community involvement at the college library.
The Zaffirini Library is 25,800 square feet, containing library stacks, a computer room, and a bibliographical instruction computer room on its first floor. On the second floor are the Learning Center's tutoring area, testing room and four computer labs.

The Senator Judith Zaffirini Library, which opened its doors at Laredo Community College South in 2004, is expected to offer more educational tools and services to students and the community thanks to $100,000 in federal funding secured by Congressman Henry Bonilla.
