LCC welcomes 19 gifted students to Honors Program

What do a future veterinarian, an aspiring art teacher and a future biologist have in common?

They are among the region’s most academically gifted high school graduates who now are part of the Laredo Community College Honors Program.

A signing ceremony and reception to formally welcome the students to the LCC Honors Program were held Wednesday, June 21 in the De la Garza Building.  Parents and family members of the honors students also attended.

The 19 freshman honors students will begin their higher education this fall at LCC with full scholarships and challenging academic opportunities.

LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina congratulated the students on their distinguished selection to the Honors Program, and he challenged them to succeed in all aspects of student life.

“The Laredo Community College Honors program is recognized for producing students who excel in and out of the classroom.  Last year, our honors students sponsored several important benefits to raise funds for hurricane victims.  It is impressive and commendable when our students are recognized for achieving academically and for working on special causes to make our community and this world a better place to live in.”

The new honors class represents six Laredo high schools, including Alexander, Cigarroa, Gateway Academy, Nixon, United and United South.

Members of the freshman honors class are Lisa Banda, Vanessa Barrera, Roland Bernal, Gracie Castillo, John Custer, Sylvia Davila, Lizette Diaz, Claudia Hernandez, Albert Martinez, Dahlia Martinez, Joshua Mendez, Beatriz Mendoza, Liliana Ornelas, Mario Ortiz, Mario Perez, Jose Ramos, Stephanie Rodriguez, Carlos Salinas and Edgar Zamora.

Established in 1988, the LCC Honors Program is recognized for giving the  region’s  top  students  an opportunity to excel in academics and community involvement, and to enhance their leadership potential.

The Honors Program at LCC offers a progressive course of study, which provides new challenges to students with exceptional abilities.  College instructor Elizabeth Kurczyn is the program coordinator.

The LCC honors student also must have graduated in the top 10 percent of his/her high school class under the recommended or Distinguished Achievement Program and must have achieved a college-ready score on the state-mandated exam, among other academic requirements.

The Honors Program is affiliated with the National Collegiate Honors Council, the governing body for all college and university honors programs, including those in Ivy League schools.

Through the LCC Honors Program, many of the graduates have been recruited by major universities.
