Noted percussionist in LCC concert June 29

 

       In the mood for some rhythm and groove?     

Get your serving Thursday, June 29 when Laredo Community College presents Nick Petrella, one of the country’s leading percussionists, in a special concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.

The concert is sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department in association with Cooperman, Sabian Ltd. and the Yamaha Corporation.  Admission to the concert is free and open to students and the public.

Petrella will perform an array of contemporary works for percussion, including Geir Rafnsson’s “Hekla,” Akira Miyoshi’s “Torse III,” and “Prelude No. 2 in C Minor” by Heitor Villa-Lobos, among other selections.

Petrella’s concert appearance in Laredo is part of the five-day percussion camp the college is hosting for area high school percussionists.  Petrella also will offer a special clinic for the campers.

Petrella, director of education for Sabian, maintains a full schedule as a performer and has commissioned and premiered over a dozen new compositions.  He also has many solo, chamber and large ensemble performances to his credit.  

Petrella received a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa, a Master of Music from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Penn State University. 

He was on the faculty of Oakland University from 2002 to 2006, and director of percussion studies at Texas Christian University from 1996 to 2001.

In 1992, Petrella was invited to develop the percussion pedagogy course at the Royal Northern College of Music, England. It was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.

He was the percussion coach for two consecutive years with the World Youth Orchestra, in Switzerland and Taiwan, and has been an adjudicator for many marching, solo and percussion ensemble competitions throughout the US.

Committed to percussion education, Nick has published numerous articles in United States and European music journals.

He holds nine designs for sticks, mallets and percussion accessories currently on the market, and has been a consultant to many companies in the music industry. 

The Yamaha performing artist has appeared as a clinician, teacher and performer throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
