Instrumental music concerts normally feature the classical works of master composers such as Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven.
Matthew Adams, one of the newest music faculty members at Laredo Community College, is planning to offer a different type of music concert.
Instead of featuring 300-year-old classical music, Adams will perform relatively new pieces—the oldest one written in 1986—in a percussion recital Thursday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater on the main campus.
The recital, sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department, is free to the public.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to introduce my style of performance arts to members of the community who may not be familiar with it,” Adams, appointed last fall to head the college’s percussion division, said.
One piece, “Reflections on the Nature of Water” by Jacob Druckman, will feature Adams’ talents on the marimba.
He said that piece is different from traditional music because it presents music juxtaposed in different ideas or images.
“The composition is very descriptive and it uses the sounds of the marimba to create auditory images of dripping water, among other things,” Adams said.
“A Rainy Perspective,” composed by Yo Goto, a friend of Adams’, highlights the vibraphone’s unique features.
“This piece is special because it makes use of the vibraphone’s unique features, including the sound created from its motor,” Adams explained.
Other pieces include “Mourning Dove Sonnet” by Adams’ former teacher Christopher Dane, and “Footpath” for the marimba written by Dave Samuels and transcribed by Mike Freeman.
Adams will finish his recital with a tune titled “Backlash” by Christopher Hanning, also one of Adams’ former teachers. This selection will feature Adams on a drum set interacting with a pre-recorded tape of electronic music from the 1990s.
Adams teaches applied percussion, percussion class and music literature at LCC after holding a post previously at Howard Payne University in Central Texas. He also is the director of the LCC Percussion Ensemble.
Originally from the northeast, Adams attended West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in music education before moving to Texas in 1999 to complete his masters in music at the University of North Texas.
Adams’ teachers included Martin Bradfield, Deane, Mark Ford, Hanning, and Ed Soph.
Adams is an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi, and has been extended an invitation to Pi Kappa Lambda.
