More than 150 young artists and their teachers will add color to their lives during the third annual High School and Middle School Art Jam at Laredo Community College Tuesday, March 21.
The guests will be welcomed at an orientation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater. Information about college admissions and registration also will be available.
Hosted by the LCC Art Department, the event was created to foster greater awareness on the educational opportunities that are available to students after high school graduation.
“The mission of Laredo Community College’s Art Jam is to engage students, from 8th to 12th grades, with the college’s art instructors and let them realize how they can benefit from LCC if they choose to study art as a professional career or as a hobby,” LCC Art Department chairperson Dale Short said.
He added that the school teachers also have been invited to take part in special faculty workshops.
The workshops will be held from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martinez Fine Arts Center in rooms 106 (photography), 109 (life drawing), 111 (printmaking), 112 (painting) and 113 (sculpture). Workshops in ceramics and art metals/jewelry will be held in the historic LCC Art Building (P-25).
The workshops will be led by LCC art instructors.
During the Art Jam, a scholarship will be awarded to a qualified high school senior who plans to attend LCC and major in fine arts.
