Nursing grads excel at Laredo Job Corps

Excellence seems to be a natural occurrence in the Health Occupations Technology program at the Laredo Job Corps Center.

The career training program has experienced consistent success with its graduates’ performance on the state exam for certified nursing assistants since January of 2002.

The most recent graduating class of seven has validated this unique distinction by earning a 100 percent passing rate on the state certification exam.

Officials say much of the program’s success can be attributed to the unique training partnership Job Corps shares with Laredo Community College.

The graduates who passed the exam on March 3 include Pedro Arredondo, Karla Coronado, Alejandro Esparza, Alexis Garza, Kimberly Riojas, Martin Sanchez and Arely Tapia.

The program’s longtime instructors are Diana Espinoza and David Hill.

Students at the local job corps center have the opportunity to study for an array of trades, including accounting, building and apartment maintenance, carpentry, clerical, electricity, food services, nurse aide, security/K-9 training and welding.

The training is open for young adults between the ages of 16 and 24, who are U.S. citizens or legal residents, meet income requirements and want to receive a quality education and training for a rewarding career.

Among the benefits job corps students receive are uniforms, bi-weekly allowance, bonus, childcare allowance, plus dental, medical and visual care.
