LCC hosts guitarists in concert at LCA Friday

Inspirational music presented by a university guitar ensemble from Brownsville will be hosted by Laredo Community College at the Laredo Center for the Arts Friday, March 24 at 8 p.m.

The LCC Guitar Club and the LCA are joining forces to host a special recital featuring the Classical Guitar Ensemble from the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College.

The concert will be held in the mezzanine on the second floor of the LCA facilities, located at 500 San Agustin Ave.  Admission is free and open to the community.

“Music to Refresh the Spirit” is the concert theme.  The Brownsville group is led by Dr. Michael Quantz, a former guitar instructor at LCC.

“It is a pleasure for Laredo Community College to collaborate with the Laredo Center for the Arts to bring the highly noted UTB/TSC Guitar Ensemble, which is touring the South Texas area,” LCC guitar instructor Dr. Cain Budds said.

The ensemble will perform an array of guitar pieces, including Pachelbel’s “Magnificat,” Spark’s “Irish Folk Medley,” Benson’s “Tarantella,” and “Swallowtail Jig,” a traditional Irish composition arranged by Quantz, among others.

Now in its sixth year, the UTB/TSC guitar program is developing its guitar ensemble as a key element in training students who are performance and music education majors.

The ensemble’s members have garnered significant achievement in area guitar competitions.

Among the performers are Marcelo Aguirre, Carlos Benavides, Allen De la Cruz, Houston Deaton, Javier Eguia, Eric Hugonnett, Leo Garcia, Johnny Marroquin, Ricardo Martinez, John Montemayor, Juan Picazo, Jair Rodriguez, Roberto Ruiz, Joel Salinas, Omar Vela and Gilbert Vogel.
